Rugby is a sport that brings people together. It promotes a team environment in which lasting friendships are built.
In 1989 Triad RFC was overjoyed to welcome to our team a strapping new prop named Ian Catto. At his first practice we were all mesmerized by his Scottish accent. This was in part due to the fact that although he sounded great we were unable to understand him.
The team immediately realized Ian's talent when he assumed control of the Forwards and made us a better team. We really knew we had a winner when in his first game he bloodied the opposing prop while dominating the front row.
Years later, Ian became Team President. As well as a rugby player we found out what a great person and friend Ian was. He was a fun loving sort who was known for parties thrown at his home. His first one was in the unfinished basement. I can still remmeber Ian telling us where his bar was to be built. That party and many others were memorable.
As the years passed and responsibilities changed, Ian retired from Triad RFC. Wanting to continue to be a part of the game he loved, Ian decided to begin refereeing. With every season he consistently improved becoming an excellent SERRS referee.
Ian was a good player and referee on the pitch, but off the playing field he was a better friend, husband and father. Ian is survived by his wife, Debra, and his daughter, Sarah Jordan. Ian Catto will be greatly missed.
